About the consultation
The Integrity Commission invites submissions as part of its consultation on strengthening integrity in local government.
Local Councillors and staff work on behalf of the community.
This means all local councillors and all staff must give advice and make decisions fairly, without favouritism and without using their position for personal gain.
The appearance of favouritism can reduce public trust in local government.
Furthermore, because Councillors and staff may deal directly with community members and often have discretion in their decisions, they may be exposed to pressure or attempts to influence decision making.
Acceptance of gifts or donations by councillors and staff may create risks both personally and organisationally, if not declared openly and transparently managed.
Summary
Following research undertaken in this area, the Commission has released a Local Government Gifts and Donations Consultation paper (PDF, 833.4 KB) about the offer and acceptance of gifts and donations in local government.
The results of this research identified that the current regulatory framework presents a number of misconduct risks.
This research indicates both a lack of consistency in policies and procedures and a lack of awareness about the potential impacts on good governance.
