When most of us think about the Integrity Commission we think of investigations looking into where people are accused of doing the wrong thing.

However, we are also here to help people in the Tasmanian public sector work out the right thing to do – before an issue comes up.

What we advise on

The Commission is equipped to advise on most ethical and integrity issues likely to confront someone working in the Tasmanian public sector.

Topics that often come up include identifying, declaring and managing conflicts of interest and in more general terms, the specific application of integrity policies such as managing outside employment.

However, we are equipped to consider most ethical matters and able to refer people elsewhere if required.

Before approaching us for advice it is important to note this is not legal advice. While we are happy to help direct you towards the actions we think are most appropriate, it remains up to you what you decide to do.

Requesting and receiving advice

So, what is the practical process for requesting and receiving advice?

We try to work with as little formality and technicality as possible. You are welcome to call or email us in the first instance. Our best contact details are at the bottom of this page.

When we respond to your request we will start with a conversation to establish the particular circumstances you are concerned about, help you to identify relevant policies and procedures, and discuss the integrity and good conduct principles that might apply.

It may be that a phone call is sufficient to deal with your request. However we can also meet with you if required and provide a written summary of what was discussed and potential approaches.

Important factors to note

While we treat all information confidentially, we cannot guarantee confidentiality in all instances. This is because we do not know what will happen in the future.

It is also important to note that confidential misconduct prevention advice does not constitute legal advice, as this is not a function of the Integrity Commission.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to inform my workplace I am seeking advice?

No. You can contact us in your capacity as a public sector employee and we will provide advice on a confidential basis without notifying your workplace. However we may encourage to raise your issue with your supervisor or other relevant person.

Am I required to act on the advice I receive?

No. We simply offer guidance and advice; you do not have to act on it. If you decide to share the advice, there is no requirement for your workplace to take action either.

Will the Commission formally support my position?

No. The Commission’s role is to provide guidance and advice, not to make rulings on disputes.
